If you’re still stuck on celebrating Read Across America with Dr. I think it’s important to share these books first so that students have a good understanding that the immigrant and refugee stories they will be reading are not the only reason we are a diverse nation. Both acknowledge Native Americans who were here first, and African Americans who were brought against their will. Two books that are not located on EPIC that you may want to begin with, include Light for All by Margarita Engle and We are a Garden: A Story of How Diversity Took Root in America by Lisa Peters Westberg. All of these titles focus on the immigrant or refugee experience coming to America and will be worthwhile substitutions for the titles found on EPIC. With each story – some true and some fiction – we will discover the rich cultures – languages, holidays, traditions, fashion, food, beliefs, and values – immigrants and refugees bring with them from their home countries adding value to the rich, diverse fabric of America. What will unfold is a better understanding of what we mean when we say that the United States is a nation of immigrants. Through these stories we will uncover their journeys to America and witness both their joys and their struggles. This year, we are going to Read Across America (National Read Across America Day is Wednesday March 2) with stories about immigrants and refugees. And many African Americans were stolen from their homeland and enslaved, brought to America against their will. It is important to remember, prior to colonization, the indigenous tribes of North America were here first – the first Americans.
We sometimes hear the United States of America called a “nation of immigrants,” and while that is partially true, that is not the entire story.
